“The Trickeries of Scapin” at Theatre 29

Theater 29 and Director Les Taylor have announced the casting for the fourth show of the 2008 season, “The Trickeries of Scapin”.

The hilarious comedy, by the French master playwright Moliere (1622-1673), has been translated for the modern stage by Albert Vernel. Theatre 29 is producing the translation through a special arrangement with Samuel French, Inc. of New York.

“We know a classic French Farce is a departure from our regular broadway based fare”, said Theatre 29 President Gary Daigneault, adding, “We wanted to stretch ourselves artistically and give our audiences to an opportunity to experience live theater from its very roots”.

Director Les Taylor brings classic Theater training from Saddleback College in San Juan Capistrano and his years of experience as a performer and Assistant Director locally to the stage in his Theatre 29 directorial debut.

In “Scapin”, two miserly fathers, Argante and Geronte, to be played by Alex Gomez and Kurt Schauppner respectively, are away from home on business. Their sons, Leandre and Octave, portrayed by Quincy Kennedy and Logan Hamm, become romantically involved with two girls, Hyacinte and Zerbinette, played by Adrianne Guerrero and Arwen Jordan-Zimmerman. In the meantime, the servants, with Graham Cooley in the lead role as Scapin, and Cameron Kilby as Sylvestre, are supposed to be keeping the boys out of trouble. The fathers return with their own marriage plans, setting of a comedic set of events. Other performers cast are Esther Wingate as Nerine and J.R. Fuifui as Carle.

 Grease in the Desert

A drive around this area has the possibility of bringing you in close contact with someone famous. This is Palm Springs. The streets are named after entertainers and politicians. Any boundaries between those two have been erased with the advent of CNN, and the Internet.

The area is filled with casinos filled with Vegas-type entertainment. Billboard signs everywhere tout high class shows. You can catch a dancing revue, see Lonesome George Thorogood jam with Buddy Guy or Foghat and think I saw ‘Hello Dolly’ plastered somewhere up along I-15. Who cares? I’m sick of paying somebody a year’s college tuition to see an act that I saw on HBO last month. I’ll pass. But there is entertainment around. You just need to look for it.

Last night we went with our good friends to see a local production of the musical “Grease” in a tiny town across the mountain called “Twentynine Palms”. Each seat cost less than a beer and dog at a Dodger game. Theatre 29 was a tiny place, holding probably a hundred people, but it was air conditioned, comfortable and homey.

I love small towns and this one fit the mold nicely. Most of the audience knew each other and probably wondered about the strangers sitting in the front row, especially the old guy with a white beard taking notes. Before the show and during breaks they were all open and friendly. They mostly bragged about their performers. And they had something to brag about. It was an excellent show.

The first act or two of any production is a bit tense and this one wasn’t any different. At the beginning the singing was a bit tentative and several nerves were on end as they waited for the play to drip into the “easy zone” and it did. My wife and her friend Rose helped this out with their abundant front row laughter and it caught on quickly. By the third scene the actors had relaxed and were enjoying themselves. That always translates into a plus for the audience.

The two playing the lead parts of Danny and Sandy were marvelous. Graham Cooley (Danny) had a smoother way of putting across a line than many actors on the big screen. I look at some of the actors today and they are crap. I will not pay money to see Will Ferrell. He’s got the acting ability of a sponge. Danny blew him away with just his facial expressions. Whoever is paying this Farrell jerk the big bucks should wander up to Twentynine Palms and see Graham.

Once Julia Oltman (Sandy) relaxed and aired her wonderful voice it was obvious why she was chosen for the part made famous by Olivia Newton John. This girl can flat-out sing.

The success of plays usually rides with the supporting cast. Not always, but for small productions it is really important. Each role was filled with a capable performer and I hope, some with a future. Shelby Art played Rizzo the tough girl and she dominated the stage whenever she spoke or sang. Lauren Schmelling played the part of “Frenchie” without flaw. I had to look again to make sure this girl was only a freshman in high school. Jessica Lomeli played the always favorite part of Jan to perfection. The three sidekicks, Peter Roeleveld, Troy Conway and Jose Mendoza played Kenickie, Roger and Doody with great flair. Along with talent Troy has one of those faces that could go somewhere. I hope I’m right. Melissa Phelps played the over-spirited cheerleader to perfection

There were a few surprises. The 50’s slime ball disc jockey part played wonderfully by Charles Harvey was spot-on and later, when he appeared as the angel, he proved he could sing in a way I didn’t think possible to find in a small theater group. Well Done.

I’m not a movie critic but I’ve attended many shows during my life and found this to be one of the best I’ve seen. It was well-rehearsed but not “robotic” and the thing that really came through was the enjoyment of the entire cast. They truly had a good time doing this and I applaud the town for supporting productions like this.

We get jaded by seeing so much entertainment paraded in front of us. We want flawless special effects, plastic-perfection women and high budget films delivered to our homes from an endless supply of the same. We critique the latest “Spiderman” film because a few small details in the set or plot don’t come up to our expectations. We have forgotten just how difficult it is to stand in front of an audience and entertain from the heart using only a handful of small budget-friendly props. Hollywood or Broadway spends billions to impress you and the upper limit is out of reach. It’s boring.

Next time you want some good entertainment try looking for it in the local venue. It’s there if you look and you won’t be disappointed. I would love to turn on a blockbuster movie from Netflix and see Graham Cooley, Shelby Art, Troy Conway, Peter Roeleveld or Julia Oltman listed in the credits.

Thanks folks. It was well worth the drive into the desert. You have fans in Oregon.

Pageant’ celebrates small-town Christmas

TWENTYNINE PALMS — The eighth and final production of the 2008 Theatre 29 season, “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever,” will open Friday, Nov. 21 at the John Calveri Theater, 73637 Sullivan Road, and run through Saturday, Dec. 20

Director Rob Wanless has taken his 38 cast members, ranging in age from 4 to 64, and molded them into an ensemble performing Barbara Robinson’s children’s story of the rough and dirty Herdman children, who take over the local Christmas pageant and shake up the community in the process.

The production comes complete with Christmas carols and an opportunity for an audience holiday sing-a-long.

Wanless said the most amazing thing was how great his very young cast members have been to work with.

With a quick chuckle, he told the story of the two very small girls, ages 4 and 5 years old, who had the entire play memorized and were reciting lines before actors on stage could deliver them.

Wanless said it took him a week to figure out what was going on.

“The actors are giving me their all when we are at rehearsals,” he said. “I can tell because a girl that comes up roughly to my knee is louder than the teenagers in the show,” Wanless said.

“We have two classroom scenes in the play. The children in the show got into their seats and were absolutely silent. I couldn’t help but think it was amazing to see a class full of students who were quiet.”

The seriousness of the very little ones is apparently contagious, the director explained.

“While giving notes after each act, I had the kids raise their hands if they’d like to ask a question, now, even the adult actors raise their hands to be called on. “

Wanless, who directed the successful production of “Godspell” at Theatre 29 in 2006, told of another young performer.

“Since we have to work on different scenes at once, members of the ensemble play different roles during practice. Emily Wescott has played at least eight different roles since working on this production. When we did our first costume call, she asked what she should wear. We told her, ‘wear anything you like, we don’t know who you’re going to be tonight.’”

“The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” will run five weekends, with performances befinning at 7 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. There also will be a Thursday peformance, at 7 p.m. Dec. 4 and a Saturday matinee, at 2:30 p.m. Dec. 13.

Tickets are $10 for regular admission, $8 for seniors and military and $6 for children under 12 and students with I.D. Tickets are on sale now through the newly redesigned Theatre 29 Web site, www.theatre29.com or by calling the box office at 361-4151.
